What is Hosting?

Think of hosting as rent. When you pay for hosting, you are renting server space. A server is a computer built just for managing web sites and making them available to the Internet. Now just like finding the right home for you to live, you will need to find a server that is a good home for your website.

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting is the bottom tier of web hosting. It’s like living in a high rise building with many tenants. Shared hosting gives your site has all the basics it needs to operate. However, there are some drawbacks. The first is that server resources are shared among all the tenants on the server. While many hosts offer “Unlimited” shared hosting, a server still has physical limitations. This means that if you or your neighbors take up too much resources your sites performance and uptime may be affected.

With that said shared hosting is perfect for small sites that don’t expect lots of traffic at one time and any small service interruptions would go unnoticed. This fits the majority of small business sites, whose purpose is to educate their visitors about the business. A benefit of shared hosting is that its the most affordable hosting available (due to the fact that there are many tenants to pay for the server and its upkeep). Logo7Media can provide quality shared hosting on low population servers we maintain for our clients.

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. A VPS allows you to dedicate the resources your site needs to operate at its full potential. While much more expensive than shared hosting, VPS gives you more control and less problems caused by those sharing the server.

If shared hosting is a highrise apartment, VPS is a rental home. You still have some neighbors, but much fewer, and there less problems with them.

Cloud Hosting

Cloud Hosting is often used to refer to using virtual servers. Cloud hosting is like owning a home in the suburbs. Your neighbors are there, but they keep themselves. Your server has its own resources that are not shared, and so are always available for your use.

Often the physical hardware is some of the most powerful blade servers matched with SAN (Storage Area Network) technology to give unparalleled flexibility and reliability. Compared to a Dedicated server, virtual servers will cost you less, but they are still an expensive option, starting around $100/mo and are self service, so you need to know how to use them or hire a system administrator. Cloud Hosting suitable for high traffic sites with national or international reach.

Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated hosting is buying a physical stand alone server that resides in a data center. You can buy a mansion or a modest homestead for your website. This is the most expensive options, but you have no one else on your server to cause problems. There are downsides to owning your own equipment, as you are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the hardware, so expect to replace the machine every few years. Dedicated servers start at around $400 and go up to $2,000 for a good machine. Expect to pay about $100/month for the data center rent as well as any maintenance and bandwidth costs.
